MCD Suspends 5 Officials Including Deputy Commissioner After Satya Niketan Tregedy

New Delhi: After the building collapse incident in Satya Niketan, Delhi, the Municipal Corporation has taken action against its own officials. MCD has suspended five officers including the Deputy Commissioner of South Zone with immediate effect. So far seven people have died in the accident. Rescue operations are also underway to search for people trapped under the debris. The suspension of the officers is being considered as the biggest administrative action taken so far after the accident.

Which five officers were blamed?

According to the order of MCD, South Zone Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, Superintending Engineer Ranveer Singh, Building Department Executive Engineer Lalit Kumar Goyal, Assistant Engineer Sunil Chauhan and Junior Engineer Ashish Kumar have been suspended. The suspension will remain in effect pending disciplinary action against all.

Why was action taken so quickly after the accident?

A multi-storey building being used as a PG in Satya Niketan suddenly collapsed on Sunday. So far 12 people have been pulled out from the debris, out of which seven died. After the accident, questions were raised regarding the safety of the building, adherence to construction rules and monitoring of MCD. Now the first major step towards fixing responsibility from the government has come in the form of suspension of officers.

Were rules and regulations ignored in the building?

This aspect has also come to light in the investigation whether the rules regarding construction and use of the building were followed or not. According to earlier information, the building had received approval for limited floors while it was being used as a five-storey PG. At the time of the accident, repair work was going on in the basement and water had accumulated there. Now the investigating agencies are connecting all these aspects to find out the cause of the accident.

Will action be taken against the building owner also?

The search for the building owner Hariram Bansal is already underway. Delhi Police has registered an FIR against him and several teams have been deployed to nab him. A lookout circular has also been issued against him. Police are investigating alleged negligence in construction and maintenance and other allegations.

What steps did the government take after the accident?

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has indicated strictness regarding the safety of public buildings after the accident. The government is preparing to implement the system of regular structural audit and safety certification, especially for PGs, schools, nursing homes and other such buildings where a large number of people live or visit. With this action, it is now also being seen whether there was any negligence at the government level in monitoring the construction rules.
